Advocacy Training on Global Compact on Migration

More than 20 Migrants’ and advocate organizations from Bangladesh, Hongkong, Indonesia, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan, and Thailand participated in the advocacy training on Global Compact on Migration (GCM), organized by Asia Pacific Mission for Migrants (APMM).

The training aims to develop awareness and knowledge of participants on the GCM, to understand the limitations as well as the relevance of GCM to the grassroots migrants, and to maximize the GCM in advancing advocacy and campaigns.

The training was divided into 3 sessions. The first session happened on 10 March 2022, in this session the participants discussed the GCM, the principles, and the 23 objectives of GCM. The participants also discuss the relevance of GCM to their situation, advocacy, and campaigns. Aside from that, the participants also try to map out their situations to the GCM objectives. GCM was seen as an opportunity for advocacy and campaigning for migrants’ issues at the national, regional, and international levels.

The second session happened on 17 March 2022, in this session the participants discussed the Migrants Spotlight Report. Migrants Spotlight Report is a report that is made by migrant organizations to spotlight their issues. Components of the Migrants Spotlight Report and step by step to make it was discussed. Migrants Spotlight Report can be published at any time and does not need to be a shadow or alternative to the report that governments or institutions published. Migrants Spotlight Report can be made with the migrant’s language, which will produce a spotlight report that is understandable by their fellow migrants and challenges the policy maker to understand it. This can also be an alternative to language justice issues faced by migrants whenever they are trying to engage in a certain forum of policymakers or UN mechanisms.

The third session was on 21 March 2022, in this session, the participants discussed their Migrants Spotlight Report ideas and plan. They discussed their issues and ways to articulate them in a report, as well as drafted a plan to make the report. There was an idea to submit the Migrants Spotlight Report during the International Migration Review Forum (IMRF) on GCM that will be happening in May 2022 in New York, USA. The Migrants Spotlight Report can also be used for national-level advocacy.

The training was closed with a graduation ceremony.
