IMA and APMM Joint Submission to the UN Secretary-General on Migrants’Human Rights Conditions

On 12 May 2023, International Migrants Alliance (IMA) and Asia Pacific Mission for Migrants (APMM) submit a joint report for the UN Secretary-General’s report on the Human Rights of Migrants. The submission is important to sheds light on the situation of migrants that could not be uncovered from the submissions and reports of UN Member States.

The inputs in the submission come from the many grassroots migrant organizations that persevere in taking in and handling cases of distressed migrants, launching campaigns for migrants' rights, providing inputs in webinars and conferences, and working closely with one another and other groups to advance the rights and welfare of migrants and their families.

Grassroots migrant organizations are a reliable and credible source of information, as they experience the challenges in the migration journey, and put forward their demands and solutions to urgent and strategic problems through campaigns and many initiatives they have conducted.

In addition to the report, IMA and APMM also attached Migrants' Spotlight Reports, national reports prepared and written by migrant organizations and migrants' rights advocates from Bangladesh, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, and the Philippines.

The submission highlights aspects of the General Assembly Resolution on the protection of migrants A/RES/76/172 that calls upon states to promote and protect effectively the human rights and fundamental freedoms of all migrants, regardless of their migration status, especially those of women and children, and to address international migration through international, regional or bilateral cooperation and dialogue and a comprehensive and balanced approach, recognizing the roles and responsibilities of countries of origin, transit, and destination in promoting and protecting the human rights of all migrants and ensuring that their legislation and migration policies and practices are consistent with their applicable international human rights obligations, in order to avoid approaches that might aggravate their vulnerability.
