Online Orientation on GCM of New Zealand

On September 19, 2024, Migrant Action Trust together with Migrante Aotearoa and IMA Aotearoa organized an online orientation on Global Compact for Safe Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM). Rey Asis from Asia Pacific Mission for Migrants (APMM) and Mandeep Bela from Union Network of Migrants (UNEMIG) present as resource person in the orientation.

Rey Asis explore the overview of the GCM and its update, as well as the next Regional Review of GCM in the Asia Pacific. Mandeep Bela explore the relevance of GCM in New Zealand and implementation of GCM by the government.

During the open forum, the participants discussed on how the GCM able to ensure migrants’ rights and how migrants’ can engage in the GCM process. The non-binding status of GCM probably will be a challenge for migrants in their effort to enjoy their rights and welfare based on the GCM objectives.
