Amplifying SEA Women Migrant Workers’ Voices and Campaigns in ASEAN

ASEAN Civil Society Conference/ASEAN Peoples’ Forum (ACSC/APF) 2023 happened on last 1-3 September 2023 at Atmajaya University, Jakarta, Indonesia. During the ACSC/APF 2023, Asia Pacific Mission for Migrants (APMM) held a side event titled Amplifying Southeast Asia Women Migrant Workers’ Voices and Campaigns in ASEAN. The side event was conducted on 2 September.

The side event was attended by around 40 participants coming from various backgrounds such as factory workers, migrant workers, migrant seafarers, NGOs and supporters. 

The side event brought up a wide range of issues and campaigns of women migrants. 

Sringatin of Jaringan Buruh Migran Indonesia (JBMI) shared the situation of women domestic workers, their issues and their campaigns. Lei Covero, shared the campaign of Network for the Protection of Women Migrants’ Rights (NPWMR) with other organizations and network to Free Mary Jane Veloso and all other women who were trapped in human trafficking and drug syndicates. Prof. Denise L. Spitzer, PhD of Alberta University shared the study result of the lives of migrant remittances. Yuli Riswati of Keluarga Besar Buruh Migran Indonesia (KABAR BUMI) shared about Omnibus Law and Human Trafficking in Indonesia. Hanindha Kristy of Beranda Perempuan shared about how the Covid-19 and Omnibus Law reinforced the vulnerability of migrant workers. 

The side event was able to highlight the ongoing and urgent campaigns and concerns of women migrant workers from Southeast Asia and raise awareness and gather support from ASEAN and Indonesian CSOs on the advocacy for meaningful participation of women migrant workers in advocacy spaces like the ASEAN and beyond.
